Biography

“Sculpture is the expression of life … and life is art. It is somehow the solidifying of what we experience, both consciously and unconsciously. I make ways of expressing our own existence.” (Teddy Cobeña)

Teddy was born in Ecuador on 16th April 1973, son of the hypnotherapist David Cobeña Vinces and fine arts teacher Judith Loor Rodríguez. Influenced by both his parents and driven by his own talent, he discovered his passion for art and science. From the age of seven, he stood out for his flair for drawing and painting, winning prizes in various contests at the Jesuit school where he was educated, as well as other interschool competitions.

He happily recalls how, in his adolescence, he read of the life and works of Leonardo da Vinci, which he found in a book in the library at his home. He discovered his great interest in art, science, human anatomy, thought and investigation. His main influences have been da Vinci, Michelangelo, Carpaux and Salvador Dalí, who have all left their mark on his style. In the body-existence-creativity-art correlation he shows a great identification with William Blake and Neville Goddard.

In 1998, he graduated as a Doctor of Medicine and Surgery in Ecuador. During this stage of his life, he combined his two callings: human anatomy and fine art.

He subsequently travelled to different cities in Europe, including Paris, London, Florence, Venice, Rome, Amsterdam and Athens. The direct contact with the art in these cities had a decisive influence on his style, obtaining the title of sculptor in Barcelona (Spain) where he works as both a doctor and a sculptor since 1999.

He continues his creations and new works, marked by a blend of anatomical realism, emotional expression and surrealism.

“How wonderful life is!” he remarks as he talks about his works.
